Chapter Fourteen

Emilio paced in front of the main staircase and looked at his watch. “Cherish!” he bellowed into the air. “How long does it take to put on some clothes?” he mumbled to himself. At first, he hadn’t minded her taking so long. He needed time to arrange security, but now it seemed like she was dragging just to get to him. He opened his mouth to yell again but stopped when he saw Dante jogging down the stairs.

Cherish followed, wearing a pair of black slacks with a black silk sleeveless blouse. A cream brocade pashmina hung over one arm. She descended, each step of her foot down made testimony to her grace and feminine strength. How was he supposed to let her go? “You know,” she said in a dry tone, “yelling won’t make me move any faster.”

Dante sat next to Emilio’s leg. He petted the dog and swallowed the adoration for the woman coming closer, determined to keep his cool. “But it got you down here.”

“That was mere coincidence. I was ready anyway. So—” she passed him the long shawl and turned her back to him “—am I dressed appropriately for where you’re taking me?”

He laid the shawl over her shoulders. “You look amazing.”

“You didn’t answer my question.”

“It’s perfect. Now, let’s go.” He guided her out the door and into the back seat of the car while Bartolo stuffed himself inside the passenger seat. The driver pulled into city traffic. “I arranged for a private dinner at a friend’s restaurant. After dinner, I thought it might be nice to take a walk at Harlem River Park. I know how hard it’s been for you to be stuck in the mansion.”

She giggled. “It has. You’re not concerned that I might scream that you’re holding me hostage?” she asked, her locs cascading and swaying at her shoulders with the car’s motion.

He stroked the side of her face. “Not at all. You’re a healer. You wouldn’t want to endanger innocent lives.”

She snapped her head to face him. Her mouth hung open, then she clamped it shut. “No,” she seethed, “I wouldn’t.”

Emilio settled into his seat. “I’m glad to hear that. I don’t like hurting people unnecessarily.” They drove for a while in a comfortable silence. He watched Cherish gazing out the window. Their time together was ending. Soon, she would leave and probably go back to living her life, Stanley included. He pushed it out of his mind. There must be a way to keep her in his life. He’d figure it out. The car got closer to a long, black awning with a line of people extending from underneath it and down the block. He tapped the driver on the shoulder. “Use the delivery entrance.” A nod confirmed the driver heard him.

Cherish turned away from the window. “An early dinner, delivery entrance. You’re taking every precaution, aren’t you?”

“I’m a careful man.” The car turned the corner and stopped in the street. On the other side of a row of cars was a plain, gray door.
